What happens on the first session?
The first session includes a mutual assessment of whether we can work together, gathering personal information and contracting (discussing timing of sessions, confidentiality and cost). For the rest of the session we then talk about whatever is on your mind.
How long do people come for counselling?
This depends on what the issues are. For some clients, a short and focussed approach of 8-10 weeks is enough to help them deal with a specific problem. For others, a longer period of time is necessary to help them fully explore their history and their current life difficulties. Many clients feel satisfied and able to move on after 10-18 months. A few clients find it helpful to stay in therapy for longer, especially if they are dealing with a particulcarly traumatic event.
How much do sessions cost?
Sessions cost £35 per 60 minute hour
Will the things that I tell you remain private?
Yes, sessions are confidential and all that is discussed between us is treated with respect and discretion. There are exceptional circumstances where confidentiality has to be broken (for example: concerning acts of terrorism), however this will all be explained to you fully during the mutual assessment session, prior to any issues being discussed.
The things I want to talk about are embarrassing, what if you are shocked?
As an experienced counsellor I have come across all sorts of people from all walks of life and can assure you that any content discussed in our sessions will be treated with respect and dignity.
What if I decide counselling is not for me?
That is fine, if you decide after the first (or any) session that it is not for you - there will be no pressure to continue counselling sessions.
